Analogue autumnal colours 2023

This autumn I was exited to go out and capture woodland colours with my Intrepid 4×5 camera and the Ricohflex TLR. Both visits to the Vijlenerbos however did not went as expected.

The first outing I used the Ricohflex TLR. This photo walk took place in horrendous conditions. Shooting slow shutter-speeds in stormy conditions was difficult and ended up in a long waiting game. Also the light conditions changed really fast. Metering the scenes was challenging. All in all the circumstances were not favourable for woodland photography. I have encluded 2 square images I like the most.

The second visit I was determined to use my Interpid 4×5 in combination with a horseman 6×9 film-back. This photo walk took me a lot of time to find any interesting composition and to setup the camera. I also had to solve a technical problem with my horseman film-back. Furthermore due to the weather conditions the ground glass of the 4×5 camera fogged really fast when composing and focusing a scene under the dark-cloth. I was happy to shoot 2 compositions before the bad weather made an end to this visit.

Both visits I used Kodak Gold 200 colour negative 120mm film. The film was develop by a film-lab. I scanned the film myself with my Fujifilm XT3 and converted, edited the images using Capture One. Converting and editing colour negative film however still has its challenges.

Capturing autumnal woodland on colour negative film this year was not a success. Unfavourable weather had a big negative influence on the outcome. However I was happy to be out and about in one of my favourite woodlands.
